Athens Alabama is in Limestone County and is the county seat. Athens City is approximately 6 to 7 miles from Polaris and New Toyota / Mazda Plant.

The Athens Hospital is part of the Huntsville Hospital system and the area is getting several new medical related buildings.

Athens Alabama is located along Interstate 65 so it has a growing commercial base including several big box retailers (Wal-Mart, Lowes) and several chain restaurants (Cracker Barrel, Applebee’s, Logan’s, Ruby Tuesday, etc). The City of Athens Parks and Recreation Department maintains and manages five city parks, the Athens Recreation Center, and the Athens Sportsplex.

Athens Alabama has a city school system composed of four elementary schools (Julian Newman Elementary, Brookhill Elementary, Athens Elementary, and Cowart Elementary), an intermediate school (Athens Intermediate School), a middle school (Athens Middle School), and a high school (Athens High School). The High School is new.

Athens Al Real Estate market is very strong because of the proximity to the new Toyota / Mazda plant and Redstone Arsenal. The east side of Athens is the area that has the most homes for sale although the west side of the interstate is beginning to grow. A recent announcement of Bucee's gas station going in at the I65 and Brownsferry Interchange and the extension of the Toyota Express way to that intersections has the potential to grow the south side of Athens.

Because of the growth of Huntsville city and the new industry coming into the area the city of Athens is slowing changing from the quaint small town to a larger city. Several regional builders such as Adams Homes, D.R. Horton, DSLD Homes, Stone Martin Homes have started building in Athens city limits. This is a function of several factors such as the City of Madison stopping development of new subdivisions and the availability of infrastructure (i.e. sewer) in the Athens city limits.
